Steag donates fire engine

Mayor formally accepts donation to Bergkamen volunteer fire department

Bergkamen/Essen. A fire engine previously in service with the Steag works fire brigade at the Lünen and Bergkamen power plant sites will in future join the ranks of the volunteer fire department in Bergkamen: Representatives from the company recently handed over the vehicle to Bergkamen's mayor Bernd Schäfer, fire department director Dirk Kemke, and other members of the Bergkamen volunteer fire department.

The vehicle was originally used by the Steag works fire brigade at Lünen power plant. “Following the closure of the Lünen plant, the vehicle was moved to Bergkamen,” explains Gregor Kowalski, head of procurement management for the STEAG Power GmbH power plants. “But since our on-site fire brigade doesn’t need another emergency vehicle of this size, we decided to give it to the Bergkamen fire department.”

Well fitted with technical equipment
The donated vehicle is what is referred to as a pumper and offers space for up to six crew members and equipment, including a 1,000-liter water tank, a power generator, a compressor, a floodlight system, fans for ventilating buildings, and numerous other technical devices, as well as hand-held radios, high-visibility vests and car jacks. This is the second fire engine from Steag’s Lünen fleet to be donated, the first having found a new home at the volunteer fire department in Selm about a year and a half ago.

“Thank you” on behalf of the town
Mayor Bernd Schäfer symbolically took delivery of the keys to the vehicle for the town of Bergkamen. “On behalf of the town, our fire fighters and all local residents, I would like to express my sincere thanks for Steag's donation. It will significantly improve what is already a good level of equipment for our fire department. The new vehicle will enable our emergency services to respond even more flexibly to a whole range of different call-outs, ensuring greater safety for everyone in Bergkamen.”

For Steag, the donation was a matter of course: “As a company, we have enjoyed good neighborly relations with the town and district for decades, and we are in regular close contact with the response teams from the fire department. So for us, donating our spare vehicle to the local fire department was simply the obvious thing to do to support them in their work,” says Torsten Koch, manager of the Steag power plant in Bergkamen.
